From American Idol to Atlantic Records: How Thomas Stringfellow & Mike Bailey Put NWA on the Music Map

A Bentonville singer. A Bella Vista producer. A viral song called “Lemonade.” And a major label deal that proves you don't have to leave Arkansas to make it in music.

The Kid From Bentonville

Thomas Stringfellow discovered he could sing in the fifth grade. He started learning worship songs for his mother, taught himself guitar in middle school, and by 17 was standing in front of Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr. on American Idol's final Fox season in 2016.

He made it to the Top 14 — impressive for a kid from Northwest Arkansas who'd grown up surrounded by foster siblings and had never set foot in a recording studio. But when the Idol cameras stopped rolling, the path forward wasn't obvious.

“I spent years traveling, performing with major Filipino artists overseas, doing whatever gig was in front of me,” Stringfellow says. Then COVID hit, live music evaporated, and he found himself back home in NWA — working at Meteor Cafe and pouring every spare dollar into studio time.

Enter Mike Bailey

Mike Bailey isn't the kind of producer who chases L.A. meetings. The Bentonville native — now a published Warner Nashville producer — has spent 25 years building a world-class studio in Bella Vista — Neve preamps, Apollo converters, the works — while quietly racking up credits that most Nashville producers would envy.

His resume includes work with Shay Mooney (Dan + Shay), Asha Mevlana (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), multiple American Idol and Voice finalists, a Netflix film score (“Boys of Summerville”), and music on Warner Brothers' Smallville. He's collaborated alongside Ross Hogarth (Van Halen's producer) and Jeff Juliano.

About a year after Stringfellow's Idol run, the two connected. The chemistry was immediate. “Thomas writes the lyrics and melodies, I arrange and produce,” Bailey explains. “We work as a duo. It's a real partnership.”

“Lemonade” Changes Everything

In the summer of 2025, the pair released a track called “Lemonade” — a bright, pop-forward single produced, mixed, and mastered by Bailey in his Bella Vista studio. Stringfellow shared it on social media in his signature quirky way, signing off as “Tommy from Arkansas.”

Atlantic Records noticed. So did their indie imprint, 10K Projects.

Within weeks, Stringfellow had signed a record deal with 10K Projects (part of the Atlantic Records family). And Bailey — the producer who'd built the sound from his Bella Vista room — landed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music Nashville, making him a published Warner Nashville producer. Two NWA guys, two major deals, zero relocation required.

Staying in Arkansas

Here's the part that surprises people: despite the invitation to relocate to Los Angeles and work full-time on music from there, Stringfellow chose to stay in NWA.

The debut album is being recorded right here — in Bailey's Bella Vista studio, the same room where “Lemonade” was born. They expect to finish in mid-2026.

“For a long time, I just wanted to make things that were good, as opposed to making what I want, and hoping it's good,” Stringfellow says. “Now I get to do both.”

Why This Matters for NWA

Northwest Arkansas is known for trails, Crystal Bridges, and corporate headquarters. But a major-label recording artist choosing to stay and build here — recording a debut album in Bella Vista instead of Hollywood — that's a different kind of statement.

Bailey puts it simply: “The unique stuff comes from other places — the outskirts. Bentonville is uniquely beautiful. You don't need to be in Nashville or L.A. to make records that compete. You need talent and a room. We have both.”

Between Bailey's studio, the growing NWA arts scene, and artists like Stringfellow proving the model works, the region is quietly building something the coasts haven't fully noticed yet — a legitimate music infrastructure that doesn't require leaving home.
